1. For all practical purpose , there are 3 major channels of transmission of HIV infection:
(a) Sexual intercourse: Including homosexual and heterosexual intercourse.
(b) Parenteral route: This includes;-
(i) Transmission through infected blood.
(ii) Transmission through infected blood products.
(iii) The Sharing of needles, particularly between high risk persons, as occurs in intravenous drug users (IVDUs)
(iv) Through contaminated syringes/needles and instruments as can occur in health care settings.
(c) Vertical transmission from mother to child during pregnancy and delivery.
(d) Other routes like deep kissing,tattooing,sexual transmission and breast feeding
