1. The counselor is one who has a sympathetic ear, has time to listen and has the knowledge about HIV / AIDS . Thus doctors, nurses , paramedical staff , teachers , community and peer leaders can undertake preventive and supportive counseling .
2. In any country counselor set up can be performed in Laboratories , OPDs , hospital wards, Clinics, Family Planning Clinics and Health Centre.
3. It is mandatory for the counselor to be easily accessible and maintain confidentiality. There should be a consistency in counseling.
4 It is important to first determine if the behaviour of the client involves a high – risk behaviour which can lead to HIV infection.
5. It is best to define and discuss how the life of the client, his/her attitude /values and self image is linked to high risk behaviour. This should also help the client to understand their potential for attitude shifts, behaviour modification and change.
6. HIV/AIDS counseling should help people to assess correct information and risks , so that appropriate behavioural changes can be induced . This will help in protection of the client and others .
7. It is fitting to remember that properly conducted counseling has the power empowerment and raise individual consciousness.
