1. Since the early eighties after the first cases were detected in USA and Europe, HIV and AIDS , has spread all over the world affecting all continents. The danger is looming large in our face and we have to accept this fact that more than 20000 persons are contracting this disease on an average on any day worldwide.

2. To add to the problem, 90% of HIV infections are present in developing countries of Africa and Asia including India . Limited funds , poverty , illiteracy, migration of people , social stigma, low status and exploitation of woman, all interact, leading to rapid spread. Not only the high risk group (prostitutes, drug addicts , etc) are affected, but the infection spills over into the general population as shown by HIV positivity in women attending ante-natal clinics.
