1. In the past few years, the following trends have been noticed in developing countries in relation to HIV infection :-
(a) The infection has become prevalent in almost all parts of developing countries.
(b) It is spreading from ‘high risk behavior groups’ (Commercial Sex Workers/drug addicts) to the general population .
(c) It is spreading from the urban areas to rural areas.
(d) More and more women attending Ante Natal Clinics (ANCs) are showing seropositivity indicating spread of the infection to the general population.
(e)
One in every 4 reported cases is a female.
(f)
Highest proportion (82.6%) of the infection is reported to occur through sexual contact. About 4% cases of the
infection are through blood transfusion and another 4.2% of the case are contributed by Intravenous Drug Users (IDU) .
(g) Almost 90% of the cases are from the age group 15-49 years, which is sexually active (as well as economically productive group) .
