(1) The causative agent of AIDS is present in the white blood cells; therefore, the virus is present in highest concentration in blood, semen and vaginal fluids.
(2) The virus is present in high concentration in white blood cells in semen and vaginal fluids, it is found in very low concentration in saliva, tears and other body fluids. Therefore, transmission via tears and saliva does not occur.
(3) The disease is not transmitted by casual contact or by air, mosquitoes, water, food or living together.
(4) The virus is easily inactivated by heat, household bleach, alcohol and glutaraldehyde etc.
(5) Health care professional who observe safety precautions as for hepatitis B infection are not at increased risk for HIV infection.
(6) Practicing good infection control is the key to protection yourself and others from contracting HIV infection and AIDS.
