(1) Use of double gloves is recommended for drawing blood specimens from patients .
(2) Soiling of linen must be avoided. Use thick dressing pad or sheet of absorbent cotton below the forearm when drawing blood samples.
(3) Tourniquet must be removed before the needle is withdrawn.
(4) Dry cotton swab must be given to the patient to press over the site of puncture after the needle is withdrawn.
(5) Elbow must be flexed to keep the cotton swab in place till the bleeding stops.
(6) Soiled cotton swab, dressing pad etc, must be place in a plastic bag, properly labeled “infected waste” and properly disposed off.
(7) Any blood spill must be carefully wiped with 70% alcohol (Ordinary hospital methylated spirit.
(8) blood must be carefully and gently plunged from the syringe to the specimen vials . These must be disposable screw- capped vials avoiding he risk of leakage, breakage or leakage , breakage or spills . After the blood deposited in the specimen vials , the cap must be carefully and tightly screwed .
(9) After appropriately labeling them, then vials must be placed in small plastic bags which should be appropriately tied or knotted.
