PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN DURING AUTOPOSY FOR AIDS INFECTED PERSONNEL

1. The following precautions should be taken while handling AIDS infected personnel during Autoposy:-

(a) Patients with HIV infection should be identified with appropriate tagging.

(b) Protective eye wear, mask, cap, gown, foot coverings, waterproof apron and double gloves should be worn.

(c) Preferably a hand saw should be used on bone to minimize aerosol formation.
(d) After the autopsy , the table , instruments and equipment should be disinfected with 1:10 bleach.

(e) All the organs should be fixed in 100% buffered formalin before despatch.

(f) After the autopsy, the closed body should be washed with a detergent solution, then with dilute sodium hypochlorite and rinsed with water . The body should be wrapped in a heavy plastic sheet .
